The Regional Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) was initiated by UNFPA as a multi-country, multi-partner cooperation framework to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem in EECA countries.

UNFPA is making progress across the region in expanding vaccine access, strengthening screening capacity and supporting treatments to eliminate cervical cancer.

The Government of Belarus has announced it has introduced the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into its national immunization calendar for the first time, allowing adolescent girls to receive the inoculation free of charge starting in 2025.

SKOPJE, North Macedonia – Fifteen years after the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was incorporated into the regular schedule of immunizations, North Macedonia in April expanded its HPV vaccination programme to make a new type of the vaccine available free of charge for both girls and boys up to 19 years of age.

Vaccination campaign in Serbia aims to eliminate cervical cancer

“It takes time for cancer patients to realise what they're really up against," said Violeta Ivković.

Thirty years ago, Ms. Ivković, from Belgrade, Serbia, was a working mother with three small children, when she was diagnosed with early stage cervical cancer.

”I went to the gynaecologist every six months,” said Ms. Ivković. “Fortunately, the cancer was discovered in time. I had therapy, a radical hysterectomy, then radiation treatment.”

Eliminating cervical cancer in Albania

In 2019, the Government of Albania, with UNFPA support, established the country’s first cervical cancer screening programme targeting women between 40 and 50 years old.

So far, 52,000 women have been screened. Albania aims to screen 80 per cent of this target group by the end of 2025.

TBILISI, 28 September 2023 – Greater efforts are needed to end cervical cancer in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, participants said today in Tbilisi at the opening of the 3rd Forum Meeting of the Regional Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention hosted by UNFPA, the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency, and the Government of Georgia.

Situation Analysis of Capacities for Cervical Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Palliative Care in Eastern Europe and Central Asia was prepared by the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in partnership with the International Cervical Cancer Prevention Association. Some 570,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed around the world every year, resulting in over 300,000 deaths annually. Although proven, cost-effective methods to prevent cervical cancer exist, they have not been widely implemented where the disease burden is highest.
