Situation Analysis of Capacities for Cervical Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Palliative Care in Eastern Europe and Central Asia was prepared by the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia in partnership with the International Cervical Cancer Prevention Association. Some 570,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed around the world every year, resulting in over 300,000 deaths annually. Although proven, cost-effective methods to prevent cervical cancer exist, they have not been widely implemented where the disease burden is highest. This situation analysis provides an evaluation of those methods in the countries and territories of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. It also identifies gaps in existing efforts and highlights priorities for improvement in 10 areas, ranging from organizing cervical screening and introducing vaccination, through knowledge- and awareness-raising efforts, to strengthening oncology services and palliative care.
