UNFPA to Mark 1,000-Day Milestone to the MDG 2015 Target Date

calendar_today 05 April 2013

ISTANBUL - The United Nations and partners are calling for renewed attention to the Millennium Development Goals as the target date for achieving the goals, the year 2015, is drawing nearer. Friday, 5 April 2013, kicks off the countdown of the last 1,000 days.

The UN Population Fund, UNFPA, has been involved in organizing consultations with citizens in most countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. In Armenia, for example, UNFPA led the entire consultation process for the UN Country Team, in Albania it conducted consultations in different parts of the country on the issue of inequalities, and in Almaty, Kazakhstan, a townhall meeting was convened. The goal has been to hear the view of citizens about progress made so far and ideas for the post-2015 development agenda. The Fund has focused on MDG5: to improve maternal health and universal access to reproductive health. In total, such consultations have been conducted by the UN in 14 countries across the region. So far over 50,000 people have taken part in this exercise either in person or online.

On the occasion of the 1,000-day milestone, UNFPA is planning a variety of activities to amplify awareness and accelerate action on the MDGs.

As part of these activities, UNFPA will join the United Nations Foundations and other development partners around the world in the Momentum 1000 social media rally - 1,000 consecutive minutes of digital engagement to amplify the MDG messages.

UNFPA will also be working with other United Nations agencies to build on the MDG Momentum – 1,000 Days of Action, highlighting the achievements of the MDGs as well as the need to accelerate action in the next 1,000 days and beyond.

Join UNFPA and help build more #MDGMomentum.
