Young people need opportunities to build their future. We have to invest in young people if we are to address demographic change successfully. The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn this into stark relief. When young people can see that there is a future and that their career goals are reachable, they stay, build families and contribute to the societies where they live. Fulfilling the rights of young people will be of paramount concern in the decades ahead.

Ministerial dialogue 5: RURAL REVITALIZATION: CHOICES & FUTURES

With increased urbanization, more and more people decide to leave rural areas to seek better opportunities in big cities or abroad. This shift is making life harder for those— predominantly older people—who stay behind. In addition, for governments, it is costly to maintain infrastructure and services in sparsely populated areas. However, the sudden rise of remote working, triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, has given many people greater choices regarding the environment in which they live.
