Eliminating cervical cancer in Albania

In 2019, the Government of Albania, with UNFPA support, established the country’s first cervical cancer screening programme targeting women between 40 and 50 years old. So far, 52,000 women have been screened. Albania aims to screen 80 per cent of this target group by the end of 2025. “My illness was discovered by chance.” In October 2022, Albana Çapo, 38 years old, from Fier, in southern Albania, accompanied her mother-in-law to hospital for a checkup after treatment for cervical cancer when the doctor suggested he give Ms. Çapo a checkup too.

Tajikistan renews costed reproductive health programme

Following up on a commitment made at the Nairobi Summit in 2019, the Government of Tajikistan in August announced the renewal of its reproductive health programme for a four-year period ending in 2027. The US$4.1 million programme is aimed at enhancing the accessibility, quality, and efficiency of reproductive health and family planning services, with a focus on the most vulnerable citizens, who make up over 75 per cent of the population and mostly live in rural areas.

ICPD30 review in European region stresses need for people-centred development for addressing demographic challenges

Delegations from over 40 countries in the wider European region convened in Geneva on 19-20 October to review progress towards the goals adopted by the landmark 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and discuss priorities for the future. The two-day conference, entitled “Population and Development: Ensuring Rights and Choices,” was organized by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia as part of a global review process three decades after the ICPD took place in Cairo.
