Sofia Alliance

Policy and Practice Community for Demographic Resilience

The Sofia Alliance is a policy and practice community launched at the Ministerial Conference on “Shaping Europe’s Demographic Future” in Sofia on 1-2 December 2021 with the purpose of supporting countries in Europe and Central Asia in strengthening demographic resilience.

The Sofia Alliance is a community of action that contributes to achieving the goals of the Decade of Demographic Resilience 2022-2032. It brings together interested governments and policy-makers at national and local levels with leading experts from academia, think tanks, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders to share lessons learned, good practices, and new evidence, and co-create concrete solutions for the demographic challenges countries are facing.

Countries joining the Sofia Alliance have access to support, and can share experiences, in addressing challenges and harnessing opportunities related to demographic change in areas such as population ageing, migration, rural revitalization, empowering young people, financing of social policies, support for families, gender equality, and enabling people to have the number of children they want.

The Sofia Alliance is facilitated by UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund and lead partner on supporting countries in strengthening demographic resilience. It is a platform for exchanging successful models, test innovative solutions, and build a community based on the shared purpose of enabling countries to thrive in a world of rapid demographic change.

The Sofia Alliance contributes to achieving Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals in Europe and Central Asia.
