Background

The UN Volunteer will support the UNFPA Regional Office’s communications, partnerships and resource mobilization team. UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, works with women and young people across Eastern Europe and Central Asia to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled. Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Communications Adviser, the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the conceptualization and creation of campaigns and cutting-edge communications such as infographics, videos, animations, and printed materials, to support UNFPA’s communications, advocacy, partnership and resource mobilization efforts;
  • Conduct research and compile data needed as evidence for campaigns and materials;
  • Liaise with partners and service providers, including designers, videographers and printing houses, contribute to selection of private sector service providers and manage contracts with external providers;
  • Assist with contacting media outlets, partner organisations and donors, as required, and compile and maintain contact lists.
  • Support strengthened relationships and the management of existing donors by increasing and improving communications and reporting to existing donors
  • Undertake research on new funding opportunities and assist in the preparation of funding proposals for potential donors;
  • Strengthen knowledge management of resource mobilisation: collate information on government and private sector donors, support the maintenance of resource mobilisation resources including the development and maintainance of donor profiles.
  • Assist with updating the Regional Office’s online communication platforms, including social media, and the preparation of newsletters and situation briefs;
  • Contribute to the planning and organization of regional events;
  • Assist with maintaining partnership networks and regular exchange of information.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Output:

The UN Volunteer will contribute to raising the profile of UNFPA in the region, generating support for realizing the rights of women and young people, and mobilizing resources and strengthening partnerships to further this agenda in the region. More specifically, outputs will include:

  • Effective and timely assistance provided in conceptualizing and creating campaigns and cutting-edge communications materials;
  • Quality research into evidence in support of campaigns and materials carried out;
  • Effective and timely cooperation with service providers, the media and other partners achieved;
  • Quality support provided to strengthening relations with donors;
  • Effective and timely assistance provided in maintaining regional onlibne communications platforms and organizing regional events;
  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in communications, marketing or related fields;
  • Demonstrable skills in communications, analytical thinking, and research;
  • Prior experience in the social development sector, including non-government organizations, government development agencies, and UN agencies (at global, regional or national level) is an asset;
  • Written and spoken proficiency as well as excellent writing and editing skills in English;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (esp. Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere), Keynote, and WordPress (or similar website CMS) desired.
  • Thorough understanding of the use of social media and digital marketing;
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting;
  • Ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds;
  • Ability to perform a variety of administrative tasks.
