Papa Schools Manual

Publication

Research shows that while most men want to be good fathers, deeply embedded gender norms and a lack of recognition by governments and health systems of the key roles men play in the lives of their partners and children make it challenging to do so. Papa Schools create safe spaces for men to explore and challenge restrictive gender norms and practice skills and actions that will help them become more engaged fathers and supportive partners.

The Papa Schools Manual was created for use by facilitators working with Papa Schools to engage men in active fatherhood and caregiving, gender equality, and violence prevention. It includes a series of sessions to enable men to reflect and build collective support for making positive, healthy changes in their lives.

The Papa Schools Manual has been developed in the framework of the “EU 4 Gender Equality: Together against gender stereotypes and gender-based violence” programme, funded by the European Union, implemented jointly by UN Women and UNFPA in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Preventing Son Preference and Undervaluing of Girls in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

Technical Reports and Document

Gender-biased sex selection has emerged since the early 1990s as a widespread practice in parts of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region and now constitutes a significant challenge to the countries affected. The preference of many parents for sons, combined with the use of modern reproductive technologies and declining fertility, has skewed the normal ratio between male and female births in several countries, mostly in the South Caucasus and parts of South-Eastern Europe. As a result, an estimated 171,000 girls are already “missing” in the region, and there has been a growing surplus of men. Research conducted in the region suggests that gender-biased sex selection occurs in a diverse range of countries that have three elements in common: a strong preference for male offspring, declining fertility rates and access to modern ultrasound technologies. The practice has far-reaching negative consequences, as it endangers the health and rights of women and girls, perpetuates a culture of gender inequality and jeopardizes sustainable social development and stability.

Depopulation As A Policy Challenge In The Context Of Global Demographic Trends

Publication

Depopulation is a recurring theme, but its contemporary causes tell a new story. Population decline today is the partial result of a natural development process. A smaller population does not have to be the defining factor of a country in economic or geopolitical considerations. A population’s composition is more consequential than simply its size. This report addresses depopulation from a multi-dimensional demographic perspective, not only looking at population size and age structure, but also differentiating by level of education and labor force participation.

QGIS for digital cartography in Censuses and Surveys

Technical Reports and Document

Geospatial data is increasingly used as census modernization advances within population data systems worldwide. It is UNFPA’s aim to expand access to software and related guidelines for using these data most effectively for development, disaggregation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNFPA’s Technical Division’s Population and Development Branch is committed to increasing the availability of both commercial (ArcGIS) and open-source (Q-GIS) GIS software and guidelines for UNFPA and our partner governments. This manual provides technical guidance on digital mapping, and analysis with QGIS, one of the most widely used free and open-source GIS packages. The manual covers all stages of digital mapping, including plotting of households within Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), creation of administrative boundaries, production of supervisor and enumerator maps, basic spatial analysis, and image processing; it also ensures that UNFPA provides National Statistical Offices and other partners with an alternative to commercial software for digital cartography in censuses and surveys.
