Recent studies in the region have identified increasing youth challenges. These include low levels of employment and enterprise development, which have strong links to migration trends; inadequate supply of vocational education and leadership development training required to match private sector needs; limited engagement and participation in national and local decision-making; and issues related to psychosocial and healthy lifestyle support, and gender inequalities and harmful practices.

As other regions, many countries in Europe and Central Asia have recently been shaken by terrorism-related events. Many young people in the region are engaged as activists, organizers, leaders and researchers in preventing the rise and influence of violence and violent extremism by fostering tolerance and peace, particularly for and among youth. Young people’s force for peace must therefore be tapped into for the benefit of their communities, including through the implementation of UNSCR 2250.
